The re-opening of Kino Atlas
Find your way to the cinema
Before Christmas, many newspapers reported that one of the most beautiful cinemas in Prague was closing down. Shortly after that, the new collective of co-owners, Vít Janeček, Zuzana Piussi, Viera Hladišová, Simona Kadrnková and Václav Kadrnka, got together with the owner of the house and agreed to re-open the cinema with an emphasis on the art and documentary program and with an enlarged Atlas plant cafe. On the first day of spring, March 21, 2023, the Atlas Cinema and the newly established Karel Vachko Gallery were presented to the public.
Cinema of viewers and filmmakers
There are more points of view that the new tenants of the cinema are trying to combine into one organic whole. That’s why they wrote them down in a text they called a manifesto on how they want to be different. The cycle Atlas of filmmakers will offer screenings with the participation of crew members from various film professions, the Atlas of thinking with film will offer co-curation and meetings with interesting personalities. In the Atlas of the Classics, they will also think about classics and cult films, which they will add to the current context, or, conversely, even student films.
The prograkm of the new cinema started with the premiere of the feature debut Unbalanced, directed by Zuzana Piussi, which opens up the topic of the limits of normality, tolerance and empathy, the importance of relationships in life and their non-obviousness.
“We are filmmakers who understand that the space for film is narrowing, so we will put our maximum energy into developing a place where the fascinations of viewers and filmmakers intersect at one point.”
